Tim Houston Releases Plan for Lower Taxes and Higher Wages

Contrasts to the Trudeau/Churchill carbon tax which will drive up cost of gas and groceries

HALIFAX – Premier Tim Houston today kicked off the 2024 Nova Scotia election by releasing his plan to deliver lower taxes and higher wages for Nova Scotia families.

“Families across Canada are grappling with the long-term impacts of higher inflation and interest rates and Nova Scotians are not immune,” said Houston. “That’s why a Nova Scotia PC Government will help workers catch up by taking immediate action to put more money back in your hands.”

Houston highlighted that, at the core of the PC affordability plan, his government will proceed with a 1% cut to the HST, saving the average Nova Scotia taxpayer $250 per year.

Houston announced that in addition to this reduction in the HST, a re-elected PC government will increase the basic personal exemption on Nova Scotia income taxes from $8,744 to $11,744.  He also announced increasing Nova Scotia’s minimum wage to $16.50 in one year.

These combined tax measures will result in tax savings of an average of $850 per household.

Other measures in the PC Affordability Plan include:

  • The previously implemented indexing of Nova Scotia income tax rates to inflation finally cancelling the stealth tax hike that had been protected by previous Liberal and NDP Governments and a measure that will save taxpayers $160 million by 2028.

  • The continued roll out of the School Lunch program which is currently supporting 74,592 students in 255 schools across the Province who now have access to nutritious and affordable lunches.

  • Supporting stable and affordable wages in the public sector by concluding 289 labour negotiations that will increase take-home pay for professions ranging from nurses, to CCAs to custodians and cafeteria workers.

Houston also reiterated his commitment to Nova Scotia’s environment plan which will ensure the province can hit its climate targets without ever imposing a carbon tax. In contrast, the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, under Zach Churchill, continues to defend Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax by pushing a scheme that would help Trudeau better hide his tax from Nova Scotians.

“Make no mistake Zach Churchill’s so-called ‘plan’ is doing more to help Justin Trudeau than any Nova Scotian who can’t afford groceries,” said Houston. “You can support a lower cost of living, or you can support a carbon tax – but you cannot support both. Taxpayers deserve clarity from Mr. Churchill on where he stands.”

“In big ways and small we are putting dollars in people’s pockets by helping them earn more at work and keep more of what they earn,” concluded Houston.  “We’re going to do our part to help workers catch up. Let’s make it happen.”
